Oh, Brain! I have Civil War but haven't had time to read it yet. It will be interesting to see whether anything seems different from my fannish osmosis impression.
The more I read the quick backstory resources that people have done for new writers, the more I think my tolerance for the comics would be very low. The soap opera nature of them, with all the bogus character deaths in particular, that come from writing a long serial without a clear plan about the endgame I think would drive me a little crazy. Weirdly, I think I could read Civil War, because from my fannish osmosis impression, there was a plan there. Not to mention a story with some real believability - that the public would react that way to super-humans, and the government would want to control them in that way. But considering my (and you can now imagine me slumped dejectedly, sighing deeply with both annoyance and resignation) new OTP, I think it would be too sad. Though I am not above spoiling myself for what comes after and finding out if there is an eventual resolution (in the true Marvel soap opera tradition) that would make the Civil War storyline acceptable. I did like that fix-it with the Skrull...
I pretty much see comics as fanficcers. I mean, it's different writers who have different takes on the characters and who run them through the wringer in different ways ... Some are great, some are back button worthy. There are even different ships! How is this different from AO3, other than copyright holder approval and porn? :D
There is definitely resolution to Civil War. I haven't even read CW, much less the followups, so I can't speak to whether S&T (and Spidey and Thor ...) have a long, drawn-out conversation about it, but they are reconciled. Don't spoil yourself for CW and then not spoil yourself for the post-CW era!

I have been prodding Amazon trying to decide the best approach. Also, with the little CW reading/research I was doing this morning, combined with your metion of Thor and Spidey, I am cracking up over whichever fixit I was reading where Cap was brought back from the dead by dark magic and Peter kept asking if he was a clone (and of course Steve couldn't figure it out because WTF clone?!). :D
