OK. The lovely and evil [livejournal.com profile] spyderqueen recced The Toasterverse AND I READ THE ENTIRE THING IN 24 HOURS.

118k. Thanks, babe. Way to enable.

That's, like, a novel. And before that I read Living in the Future - based on the Ultimates timeline, where Tony Stark's backstory is different - built armor at age 16, and Howard wasn't a total abusive jackass, so no daddy issues. 36k.

And before that I read Clueless, or: How I Learned to Stop Being a Selfish Prick and Love a Capsicle. 36k

And mixed in there I read about 10 stories approx 4k each. And that is my reading for THE PAST WEEK.

We are approaching discovery-of-Library-of-Moria levels of fic consumption here. Please note I discovered Library of Moria when I was unemployed.

I'm sorry, this cannot continue.

For one thing, I don't particularly care for this 14-year-old-girl crush thing I have going on, primarily for Tony Stark, though Steve Rogers is mixed in there. Gah. At least it is better than my horribly gut-wrenching crush on ELIJAH WOOD, jesus, terrifying for a 31-year-old woman. At least I'm the same age as RDJ. Ha. He's even a tad older than me. See. Age-appropriate at least, not a child-molesting pervert this time!

Also, if I read that much I do NOTHING else. NOTHING. And my life cannot be that. So. I will NOT be checking LJ or DW for a week.

However, if you are looking for enabling:

The Toasterverse is a must read. She does a good job on getting all POVs, but particulary if you want to hit your Tony Stark kinks - the opening story is a fab presentation of Tony Stark's neurosis, daddy issues, and total insanity. It's very, very funny, and for all you Red Dwarf fans - *solemn face* - there is a sentient toaster. Just saying. The last piece, however, is a tour de force of OMGCOMPETENCEKINK. To me, this story is much more Tony Stark. I know the man is an emotional mess, but he actually does not babble like Woody Allen, the way some people like to write him, with highly amusing results. This is Tony Stark, the genius, who absorbs everything, learns from everything and everyone, and possibly the most incredibly dangerous Avenger of them all just because of his brain. The middle piece is Phil/Clint est rel. If you like those two characters, you will LOVE this. And Clint and Tony. Awesome.

If you are willing to stray a little farther from the Movieverse, I also highly reccommend Living in the Future. This is actually more of a Steve competence piece. I totally get annoyed when people have Steve constantly doing retarded things like microwaving forks. He's a man out of time, not a moron. The Barbarian would not microwave a fork, jeez. This is Steve the great guy and the super soldier, adapting fast, with the help of a fresh, wide-eyed Tony Stark. I love this author's description of Steve, the first time Tony gets to see him fight: "In battle, he's utterly fearless, cunning, vicious, and just a little bit cocky." This Steve seems lighter, too, though, or maybe the author feels him more as a fighter. After the Avengers first fight togheter: "Steve slams Tony's helmet with his hands and laughs in his faceplate, eyes sparkling." A lot to love in this story.

I cry that the fics in this fandom must be so epic. But it's crocodile tears. The writers are fantastic

I'm sort of double-teamed. I read a load of Avengers over the past several months. Then I fell into Generation Kill (Oh my god, love so much!!!) and have very nearly read everything ever written. And since the Avengers movie came out there's been so much fantastic fic (no thanks to bluemeridian and her gazillion awesome recs PER DAY!). I feel like I've been on a fic binge forever, and I haven't even had time to keep the recs lists updated. /o\

I totally agree on all your pimps here! Competent!Tony in the Kidnapped fic is making me love him even more than I already do, which is ridiculous amounts! There are a couple of (short!) pieces by kungfunurse on AO3 that get into the "Steve is more competent than people give him credit for" thing.

(And yeah, good thing RDJ is around my age, although the boys in Generation Kill are all in their 20s. Argh!)

Hahaha! Yes, that was Fruity Rudy hugging Pappy, the sniper. (And you know Rudy was played by himself, right?) Anyway, that's how snipers operate--one guy with the rifle and one to be the spotter. The spotter lies half on top of the shooter so they can sync up their breathing. Breathing has a LOT to do with proper firing. The spotter is actually the better shot. He's the one who determines environmental impacts on aim and directs the shooter.

So, yeah, Pappy and Rudy as a married couple is a thing. (Rudy shaves Pappy in the field!) Mostly GK fic is about the EPIC eyefucking between Lt. Nate Fick and Sergeant Brad Colbert. Seriously, this is just SOME of it:
