In a rare event for me, I cut a substantial portion of what I wrote because I thought the piece was better without it. But for those who must fix the sad. :D

Daniel watched them ride away. His mind had been racing since he realized Jack was going.

Jack had told him many times that Daniel wasn't cut out for life on the trail. Jack had only ever known Daniel the farmer. Had never met Daniel the anthropologist. Daniel who negotiated with strangers, and ate everything that crossed his path, and married women gifted to him by tribal elders, and defended the weak against the strong.

He thought about leaving the pail right there, saddling up and following. But he resisted the impulse. For one thing, none of his good work horses was up to a long ride.

The school marm and her sister could have the house, free of rent, if they looked after the buildings for him. It was close enough to town. Someone in the drinking establishment would know where Jack was headed. Daniel knew he talked to local ranch hands there.

He watched Jack until he was out of sight, then returned to his chores. He could follow soon enough.

All right! I thought I remembered there was a Part Two for Happy Ending Folks. :-)

I love that Daniel has his plans all made before Jack's even out of sight, lol.
