Rambling about writing

I'm just cracking 10,000 words on the hydropunk piece. I feel like this is getting written faster than anything I have done before. I've been writing fast and dirty, not letting myself get hung up on small points, so it will need a really good edit. I know Sam says somethings abotu Teal'c and genetic engineering at the beginning that don't match up with some later revelations. I've been switching back and forth on character names: Rodney/McKay, Sam/Carter, etc. Lots of other fine points that I usually get right the first time that I'm just writing through in the interest of getting the ideas out as fast as possible. Not to mention that I decided to really give into the idea of parallel, interwoven timelines, but only after I was about 6000 words in. So I've been going back and picking break points in the hydropunk part to drop in the flashbacks. No idea at all how that is going to read. My plan is to just get it all OUT, then go back and do a read through to be sure I like the parallel timelines. Fix that. Then go back again to fix continuity problems, edit, and improve.
I am thinking there's at least 2000 words in the past timeline and 3000 words to wrap up the hydropunk part. So I'm expecting this to top out at 15,000 words, approx.
Meanwhile, I have mostly recovered from my cold of last week. And am starting to yearn for yoga again. I had planned to just focus on getting this thing written, but now I'm also realizing that I *will* suffer the next time I practice. Thinking maybe tomorrow, I'll do something short - maybe MTV Power. Then I can suffer, recover, and write on Friday and Saturday, and maybe on Sunday morning I'll get up early and really indulge in a luxurious practice - maybe Solar Flow I. Then next week alternate practice and writing days. Realistically, I can only write about 1000 words a day, so it will be five writing days probably before I can start editing, and this monster will probably need five solid editing days, too. I just can't stop exercising for another 10 whole days on top of how long I've already been out. So. Decision made in the course of writing that last paragraph.
Of course, the *awesome* thing would be to accomplish yoga and 1000 words in the same day. I'll make that a personal goal.

Date: 2009-11-04 04:38 pm (UTC)My problem is usually teh writing part. On workout days, I put on my workout clothes when I get up, and teh momentum carries me forward. On writing days, I have trouble with the momentum part. I doodle around in the kitchen. Make some breakfast. Read something while eating breakfast, get distracted by some e-mail responses to comments. Or the thing I was reading over breakfast was too awesome and must be finished right now. And then I get ready to write and I got nuthin. Or I get ready to write and The Barbarian wakes up. Or I'm just out of time.
But on this piece, I think I could pull it off. That's how it's getting written so fast in the first place. I just sit down when the time window opens up and do a 1000 or 1500 word dump, then save, backup, and move on. Repeate again the next morning. This might be the writing project that maybe can establish the alternating day strategy. Maybe. *is determined*
