Sep. 22nd, 2008 08:42 pmI have been working on Ye Olde Website (http://brainofck.110mb.com) where I have posted Possession (http://brainofck.110mb.com/Possession.html). Sorry, it is not linked up into the site navigation because I was vetting the layout and trying to decide if it was just TOO annoying, or infact, really pretty. (Feel free to comment on layout, but I have decided that when I'm done doing my foofy pages, I'm going to go back and create a shadow website - white pages with black type - for those who prefer to read something much simpler.) :) Anyway, I am trying to reread as I post, particularly the long pieces, to check for typos from the original posts, mainly, as well as to check for navigation issues, etc. (BTW, not done with Possession yet. Just got to Sam's POV where she is referring to Jack as "Jack" which is way wrong in the context and will probably get edited.)
Reading Possession - my very first Stargate story - I realize that I have a lot of issues with that story now. *sigh* I'm seriously scared to go back and look at Arena... I didn't much care for 1+1+1+1 when I reread that, either.
I'm both sad and happy to report that I am not writing anything at all at the moment. Sad, because I like writing, but happy because I'm in a good place with it and RL has been so horrific (well, not that horrific, but both kids had stomach viruses [but I didn't, yay?] recently that if I were trying to seriously write anything I would probably be having nervous breakdown. Which I actually thought I WAS having last week, honestly, but apparently not, or the effects were very short-lived.
Anyway.

UPDATE: Link to Possession fixed. Sorry! Nekkid wimmin hijacking my porn again!

Date: 2008-09-23 03:55 am (UTC)Bless you (sayeth she who is stubbornly ignoring the screaming need to buy reading glasses).
And just my two cents, but an author's older works are part of one's history, no matter if it makes you cringe, there are people out there who love your work and have enjoyed watching it progress.

It also lets me off the hook. I can do any crazy thing I want because I think it looks pretty without any long term guilt! And isn't it strange where we can get our guilt from? :)

Yeah. I myself have fan fiction favorites that I know are not the greatest works of literature and have been very disturbed to lose at the author's whim. If anything, I might do a big remix and post it as something new. But the entire time I have been writing, I have also tried to make it a rule not to belabor this. Write as best I can, and try to write well, but it's just a hobby, after all.
My other rule is "Share the Porn." :)

Date: 2008-09-23 02:13 pm (UTC)I did a few pages this morning and this is easier than easy to do. I should have a shadow site up for all the existing pages in the next few days, and should be able to add them in parallel with new updates no problem.

Date: 2008-09-23 03:49 pm (UTC)Oh sorry, were we talking about the formatting? :)
VERY easy to read, thank you! Feel free to use me as an old-lady guinea pig reader any day.

Date: 2008-09-24 04:25 am (UTC)May I vote for this link/style... the white background with the nice font size, black text one?
I generally skip over sites that are hard on the eyeballs, but I just adore your writing so I make the extra effort to copy and paste into a text file to be able to read.
LJ does make it easier to read an LJ posting by adding the ''format=light'' but it's a pain to have to jump through the hoops.
Thanks for asking for your readers thoughts on this.

Date: 2008-09-24 08:16 pm (UTC)Actually, if IE or the other browsers would have a one-button-click to ignore colors/font style-size (instead of doing the Dance of the Castanets...click-clickty-click....going into Tools> Options> Accessibility> yadda> then rinse and repeat in reverse), then all would truly be right with the world. [Simple things make me so happy!]
And yes, I did look at the Possession's story webpage. I guess what sends my eyeballs a little bonkers is the fabric patterned background. Maybe if it were a little bit more narrow in size? Also, not that this has anything to do with you, but having double backgrounds really causes the page to load slower. I'm on DSL at work with a pretty decent computer and the page tends to scroll load rather than pop up (basically) all at one time.
And to answer the other question....I think older stories should be basically left as they are unless there are glaring typos or other some such. I think it is nice to see the evolution of the writer's skills.
When you get the urge to revamp a story, remember, an object doesn't have to be all shiny to have beauty.
