After a little while of watching LJ Toys, a few things stand out.

I am amazed at how many people come and read Possession. It is an unusual day when at least one person doesn't blast through the whole thing. It is quite common to see two or three readers a day.

And I hadn't really thought about it, but Adjustments doesn't get the same love. So either somebody influential has rec'd Possession somewhere, so people are coming to Possession from somewhere besides my own index page, or people are at the index page and look at the description fo Adjustments, and say no way, Jose! :D

Of course, plenty of people come in and graze off the main index page. Which is cool. Even more cool, it is common for a person to come and stay awhile, chomping down eight or ten stories in a sitting.

I definitely see readership up on stories that get rec'd or mentioned around on [livejournal.com profile] stargate_search.

The Brain takes hits from 24 people a day, approximately, after I exclude my two locations. That's consistant over time. It goes up on days I post new fic and on days that I get a rec or something, but on days when the Brain is just sitting there, minding it's own business, it gets vistiors. That's kinda cool.

LJ Toys is wonderfully informative but also horribly frustrating. [wry smile] I get a steady trickle (as in a couple per day on the average, sometimes more) of people coming to read "Incompetence," my first HP story. It's a very short (porn battle length) story, humorous, featuring Draco/Giant Squid. [cough]

I'm not at all known in HP fandom -- only this and one other story, also humorous but no sex -- and I'll be damned if I can figure out where these folks are coming from. Not that I mind, of course (although it'd be nice if one or two of them commented) but it seems it must have been recced somewhere, to have these people still coming all this time after it was posted. But I can't find it! [laugh/headdesk]

I'm still getting people reading through "Family Obligations," and every now and then someone will come read "A Hidden Magic." But "Incompetence" has probably gotten more steady readers (albeit in a trickle) than any other single story. Which is incredibly wierd. [blinkblink]

(Not that it's at all surprising that people like "Possession," 'cause it's a very cool story. :) )

I really wish LJ Toys recorded referrals, though, so I could see where folks are coming from.

You now what you should do? You should put an update on that story, dated today, and note your frustration about not knowing where your readers are coming from and begging people to make a quick note, even anonymously, about how they found the story. I bet you'll get some answers pretty quick!

You know, that might well work, but see, to me it feels like whining for comments and I get this horrible shrivelly feeling at the thought. :/ If I followed a link to read an older story and saw that the writer had added that sort of note, I wouldn't mind and I'd go ahead and give them to link, but when I think of doing it myself I want to run and hide. I know, I'm lame. :(

I just wish LJ had a referral feature so we could see where people come from. Of course, to do that they'd have to set up a hit-tracker thingy of their own and so far they haven't even done that, so I'm not holding my breath. [wry smile]

I totally get that. Heh. Include that comment too. "I'm not whining for comments, really, honestly, but my friend made me add this update."
