By way of explanation
Eleven
It was bad. It was really, really bad.
Daniel was hyperventilating from pain. He could see bone. There were sharpened stakes set in the ground. That would be the cause of the searing, ripping, mind-bending pain in his back. Beyond the edge of the pit, Jack was cursing. A rope snaked down, then Jack was beside him, tight-lipped.
Fifteen minutes of triage and a shot of morphine later, Jack said, "Don't you die while I'm gone, Daniel."
A kiss to the corner of Daniel's panting mouth. A gun laid in his palm. Jack headed for the Gate at a sprint.
