I have been reading Days of the Week over breakfast.

Excellent! Funny! Very well written. Refreshingly mocking take on the cliches of Stargate slash. Maybe a little crude for me, but I don't think any worse that The Diaries' obsession with Jack's piles.

And it contains the new, trendy typo.

"I feel rather than see the shutter that passes over him. "

A shutter is a covering you put over a window to protect it from bad weather. Or a part of a camera that controls how the film is exposed to light. :) The necessary word is obviously shudder.

This is very odd, as the writer is very good.

I had never seen this typo until about three months ago. Now almost every story I read has it. I wonder if there's some bug in some new version of Word or something...

Interesting. (And I think that fic is hilarious.) But I don't think it's a typo. The shutter passes over him, rather than through him. I read it like a camera shutter, as Jack was envisioning something unpleasant, he'd rather not see.

I also did a quick google of Area 52, and you're right, it comes up as a typo, in about half the links.

I'm so much more aware of grammer (mis)usage, now that I'm writing. Sometimes I want to scream in frustration! The author couldn't possibly have even read their finished product, let alone used spellcheck, before posting.

Heh. I was being incredibly charitable saying "typo." What I think is that these people don't know the word they are trying to use. They have heard "shudder" as "shutter" all their lives and they misspell it and don't even know.

You are being even more charitable than I, trying to find a way that the writer could have meant to use the word shutter. I think this writer is too good for her to have tried to contort the word shutter in that way.

But maybe I'm too jaded. :)

Well, yeah. Typo=stupid, blatant, mistake here, people!

I sometimes try to find if the author has ESL, then I feel more forgiving. If they throw in other stupid stuff-I'm having trouble thinking of one I didn't acually just read-but like screwed up timelines or too much OOC behavior, I mentally put them on my 'do not read again' list.

Another one that always bugs me is deep-seeded. Aargh!

I don't think you're jaded, I agree with you in general, just not this instance.

People shouldn't take their knowledge of the english language for granite *g*

But maybe I'm too jaded. :)

Doubtful. My guess is that people read some influential fic written by a writer who was (otherwise) clearly very good (maybe even the one you just recced) and saw shudder spelled "shutter" and thought, "Eek, I've been misspelling it all this time!" and rather than pick up a friggin' dictionary to make sure, they just start using "shutter." Fan writers have a truly amazing capacity for pooling their ignorance and passing it around like brownies. [sigh]

Oh, there's a few in that fic:

I grimace and role over.
"You're just trying to back peddle now," (I see that one a lot! *shuDDer*)
'that sonofabitch Michaelson,' whose's done something unforgivable
I seem to have past it
bitting down

Some of the trickier ones are right -- ado, loose -- but it still could use a beta.

Definitely. [nod] I just read it and there are a bunch of glitches. Not a ton but it could use some sandpaper.

I like sonofabitch or sonuvabitch. Or "YesJackyesyesyes!" *g* I also like to use 'dammit'. I consider their use as poetic/artistic license.
