Daniel Jackson had seen a lot of amazing, awe-inspiring things in his travels.

Jack O'Neill in flight was the most beautiful.

Swooping. Soaring. Flying over the valley below, against an alien panorama; a mountain range higher and more vast than the Himalayas and the Alps and the Andes combined.

Daniel still forgot to breathe whenever he witnessed Jack's launching leaps. Sam assured him that Jack's flight could not be explained by the usual rules of aeronautic science and physics. His fragile wings, a mere twelve feet from tip to tip, should not be able to lift his bipedal body, designed for plodding on solid earth, and propel it through the air. By her rules, Jack's wings should be barely functional for gliding, or possibly for riding updrafts and coasting on air currents. Jack's body should hang limply below, not stretch taught and straight as the fuselage of the jets his new anatomy no longer allowed him to fly. Jack should not be able to flap his wings like a sparrow and fly, diving and turning with the agility and speed of a hunting hawk.

At the moment, Jack was turning wider and wider circles high overhead. Daniel didn't know what Jack thought while he flew. Did he supervise the mining works that crawled over the mountains across from his aerie? He was always in radio contact, and he was the commanding officer of the project.

Daniel suspected Jack's mind was on other things, no matter how he seemed attentive in staff meetings and focused in his reports back to the SGC. Daniel felt Jack changing, his thoughts becoming more distant and other even as his vision became super-sharp and his hearing became hyper-sensitive.

Jack's staff had felt the changes, too. Witnessed them. It has been Major Leif who had pleaded with General Hammond for relief.

"He flies, sir, all the time."

"The camp is running smoothly, Major. I haven't seen any lack of attention to his duty."

"I know, sir. It isn't that. He's…" the major paused, and SG-1 and the general waited patiently for him to collect his thoughts. Finally, he looked his commanding officer in the eye and said, "I think he's lonely, sir. I think he misses a real field command. I'm waiting for the day he just flies away."

General Hammond took his officer's concerns under advisement, and then asked how Daniel would feel about continuing his membership in SG-1 while commuting by Stargate.

No one asked Daniel about his life in Jack's nest. They were all so relieved he had come to tame their strange, abrupt, abrasive commanding officer that they didn't question his methods. No one dared say that Jack had been broody, but Daniel could see that now that his mate had arrived, Jack's mood was calmer and his sense of humor returned.

No one asked Daniel what it was like to be mounted by an eagle or owned by a bird of prey; or to hold the fluttering heart of a flying creature in his own hands.

And Jack continued to change.

The day came when he left radio contact. Daniel saw him disappear, first dwindling to a barely visible dot on the horizon, then vanishing from view completely. His heart didn't beat properly until that night when the bed shifted and warm feathers covered him.

Daniel hadn't tried to radio him, and Jack's secret venture remained secret.

Then he was gone for two days with no contact.

When he reported back to a Major Lief on the verge of panic, trying to plan a search and rescue with the vaguest hope of success, Jack made his apologies, saying he was blown off course by an unexpected varying jet stream and it took him a whole day to find a landmark he recognized and make his way back.

The fact that Jack felt this was adequate explanation, and the fact that Major Leif accepted it just illustrated exactly how strange the situation had become.

When Jack asked for a week's leave for himself and Daniel without checking with Daniel first, Daniel was irritated, but not surprised.

"I'm three mission-reports behind, not to mention seven different projects need my attention," he ranted.

His birdman just smiled serenely, flicking his wing tips and running his fingers through feathers, preening and smoothing.

"There's something you have to see," was all Jack would say.

Daniel flew with Jack often. It was the only way to reach the aerie. But he had never flown with him for nearly two whole days.

The jungles beyond the mountains were lush. The plains beyond a deep, grass green. The beach and the sea, were spectacular.

Jack spread his wings on the beach. The blue feathers were iridescent in the sun.

Daniel stared up into the clear sky. He fell asleep dreaming of pyramids. A falling dream wrenched him awake to find himself under the shade of sky blue feathers, protected from sun and sand and salt water, Jack's breath ruffling his hair and dampening his cheek.

Ooo, cool! I love (and ache for) the way Jack is more alien, and pulling away from humanity. Except his mate, of course!

or to hold the fluttering heart of a flying creature in his own hands

I would never have thought to write wing!fic, but I sorta like the way this turned out. Glad you liked it!

Oh wow! If it weren't for Daniel, Jack would be long gone but there's no way Jack can leave him behind. Excellent fic. Packs a lot into such few words.

Nope. Jack can't leave Daniel. Though I suppose there's always the risk that he might just grab Daniel and fly away. :) Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it!

Glorious. I love that Hammond KNOWS that Daniel is the humanizing touch Jack needs--commuting by Stargate, indeed. Your descriptions here are so lyrical, it's like flying along with Jack. And that last image, Daniel dreaming of falling but actually protected by his flying Jack, is so bittersweet and gorgeous.

Most excellent wing!fic! Some of the stuff is too stupid for words, but this leaves an ache in me that wishes I could fly.

I'm curious about where Jack took him.

You know, I've never really read any wing!fic. It was all the rage just as I wasn't reading LOTR_RPS much anymore. But there are so many weird cracky story types that work much better in the sci fi context - mpreg being another one that leaps to mind.

I'm so pleased you liked it. I had that same kind of feeling imagining and writing this, so I'm glad it came through. Also, this was the result of a lot of scrapped ideas that *didn't* fit the mood. Might be fun to switch back to a Jack POV and try out some of the other thoughts.

That you could take such a bizarre subject(dear god, not wingfic)and turn it into a poetic and wonderful story is a testament to your skill as a writer. I am in awe. Just wow. :)

Whee! I'm just getting back into town to find this lovely treat waiting for me. It's an evocative story with a completely unexpected approach to the trope. While the earlier wing story (http://brainofck.livejournal.com/245454.html) was wacky and irreverent, this one is melancholy and haunting.

"I think he's lonely, sir. I think he misses a real field command. I'm waiting for the day he just flies away."

Love how you convey Jack's loneliness and isolation here. Not only are Major Lief's observations sad and telling, but also having them recounted from a third party pov removes the reader from Jack and makes us experience his new distance for ourselves: he's flown out of our reach - great writing choice.

Daniel stared up into the clear sky. He fell asleep dreaming of pyramids. A falling dream wrenched him awake to find himself under the shade of sky blue feathers, protected from sun and sand and salt water, Jack's breath ruffling his hair and dampening his cheek.

Love how you capture both the beauty and the strangeness in this image. Here and throughout the fic, I like the way you show the current of unease in Daniel at Jack's increasing alienness right alongside the evidence of their love for each other. Nice tension in those oppositions; makes the piece interesting and complex, and gives it an edge of sadness.

Thank you so much for writing this!

I could talk about the poetic beauty of this and how apt is is that Jack turned into a bird (once a flyboy, always a flyboy) or how only you could write wing!fic that would make me want to read more of it...but I think I will settle for the fact that I am alternating between being doubled over on the floor giggling with pictures of a "broody" Jack and all the things no one wants to ask Daniel and angsting with Daniel about Jack's disappearances.

Well you asked me to comment ...

... and I am honoured you have asked me for suggestions ... but I think you have suggested one yourself ...

"No one asked Daniel what it was like to be mounted by an eagle or owned by a bird of prey; or to hold the fluttering heart of a flying creature in his own hands."

umm ... can we have one of your scorching hot sex scenes with feathers?

Also ... it would be fun if someone else in SG1 gets wings - how about Teal'c? Then he can also fly and have hot sex with Sam, and all four of SG1 can go off on cover missions together.

Well, of course, the first goes without saying! :D

OMG! More people with wings, leading to sexy!flying!SG-1 fighting evol throughout the Milky Way! :D

Actually, I had not considered more people getting wings. It would not be a totally stupid thing to happen. I mean, if Jack got wings, he had to get them somewhere from something - why wouldn't someone else be exposed to the same something? That was *not* where my brain was heading, but there's no reason I can't write multiple varieties of wing!fic, now that I've started... *ponders*

what appeals to me in all this is the fact that there is one with and one without wings in the coupling. It sets up all kinds of gentle inadequacies - being different so having to stay off world/having these amazing new abilities versus being perfectly normal and seeing your friend change and not having those new skills. That I think creates a lot with which to create interest in the relationships (and the angst/comfort for that steaming hot sex too).

I read an Atlantis thing somewhere where Rodney got wings with what his team ended up calling a 'wingbox'. That was ironic as of course John didn't get them couldn't fly, and he would be the one who really really wanted to. Rodney was reticent and scared. It was John who coached Rodney (and got closer to him through that and into hot loving sex) and then of course Rodney returned the favour as he understood what John was going through was able to take John flying.

How about sex on the wing BTW?
