It is likely that if you start reading fanfic, you will be completely spoiled for Civil War, and eventually it will be unscary, because you will know the content. Maybe the best approach is to find some Civil War "fixits" to read first. :) I have already rec'd a bunch in this journal, though I probably didn't identify them as such. And of course, green_grrl has AWESOME Marvel recs.
I will say that I was impressed with the art in Civil War.
If you want ALL the Civil War content, you will definitely want to frighten your friend's bloke and start opening all his acid-free bags. Because if you put together a cart at Amazon with all the Civil War relevant titles, you're going to spend well over $100 USD - I can't remember how much exactly, maybe way more - and that is crazy. I will say that if you are willing to futz with the individual comics, there was a complete set of the Extremis story arc (I think 44 individual comics?) on Ebay last week for $31 or so, I think. So you can definitey find stuff there that's affordable.
I would have been more than happy to just be a movie fan, but there is so much awesome fanfic that goes back to the comics as source material. And I've been *loving* the high quality of the fanfic. I've been sucked in. What can I say, except - beware! If you go out there reading the good stuff, you may be sucked in, too!
