Disclaimer: If anybody is planning a script like this for SG-1, I'm certainly not going to claim any rights to it. However, I'd be delighted to work in a co-writing/consulting/first-reader/advisory-type capacity, with my fee to be negotiated at that time. :D
The Matrix: This one is Death. The Matrix is located here.
Archive rights: Absolutely none. My journals only. [livejournal.com profile] muck_a_luck and [livejournal.com profile] brainofck.
Author's Note: I originally wrote this on June 11, 2006, the same day I wrote Naptime. I rediscovered this while working on my GreatestJournal links. It was posted private, which probably means it was only the beginning of something, but I can't remember where I was going with it, so here it is, in the state I found it today.

Jack didn't consider himself a particularly spiritual man. Years of meeting gods and destroying them hadn't made him any more inclined to faith or belief. Sometimes, after a narrow escape or a great success, he would think that maybe there was a higher power. Something larger than himself.

But Oma Desala wasn't god. And neither was Daniel Jackson.

There were plenty of things larger than Jack O'Neill.

Planets were bigger than he was. And somehow, sometimes, sleeping on the ground, he felt the Presence of Something.

He had felt it the first time when Charlie was just barely crawling. They had gone to the park and he was lying on the blanket. Charlie was creeping about. Sara was across the wide lawn, talking to a woman she knew from somewhere. And Jack could feel them, through the earth. Charlie, crawling next to him. Sara farther away. He imagined that he could reach out through the ground and feel the feet of all the people of the world, moving about their business. It had been close to an out of body experience. Then he reached out and snagged Charlie before he got away onto the grass, and Sara came back over, and the connection was lost in the richness of human contact.

He felt it again, and often, when he had started going through the Stargate. Alien planets drew him in, when he lay down in his bedroll. He would feel Daniel beside him. Teal'c and Carter in the next tent. And as often as not, no one else, anywhere. It was humbling. It was exhilarating. It made him feel so safe and so afraid.

Now he lay on the rush mat on the concrete floor of Teal'c's quarters. He felt the connection again. It was easy to find it now. He felt all the lives around him. All the important people. Carter working in her lab. Teal'c and the new recruits practicing hand to hand in the gym.

He stopped himself from reaching too far.

There were feet he wouldn't find. Connections he would never make again. And some days, it was too difficult.
