What's important is not keeping them from seeing/reading things, because it cannot all be avoided. Life goes on around people. What's important is the DISCUSSION, and that seems to be what people want to avoid. My parents had talks with me and my sister about why certain words were not nice to say or why casual sex is neither common, or necessarily a good idea, etc etc.
