His solemn eyes were the darkest slate grey and Jack was drowning in them all over again. After hours of fussing and diapers and worrying they had come to a quiet moment, all of them, Charlie loosely swaddled in a crib blanket, Jack wrapped around him, and Sara pressed up behind and Jack couldn't make his eyes close.

He knew Charlie was just another baby, two weeks old, with a smushed nose and flailing arms. His little mouth was so expressive, making little feed-me faces, his tongue licking in and out, sometimes pursing into little kissy lips, sometimes relaxing into a mysterious sweet smile that was a harbinger of laughter to come.

But the depth of those eyes. Jack was sure that if he only knew how to ask, the answer to every mystery of the universe was hidden somewhere behind those serious, quiet pools of grey.

The jagged edges of sarcophagus withdrawal had been softened by Valium, but Jack knew this was a memory, not a dream. He hadn't thought of Charlie like this in years. In his head, Charlie was always ten years old, and almost always dead.

This was Charlie, alive and tiny and trusting and everything that was good and difficult. This was Jack, reduced from combat veteran, elevated from sometime assassin, just another inexperienced parent facing the wonder of new life and wondering how he ever came to deserve this privilege and responsibility.

Because this was a memory, he knew that the too pointy chin digging into his shoulder and the warm moist breath on his ear should be Sara. But he knew it was Daniel with so much certainty that he didn't even bother to look around, just drew his son into his arms and leaned back into the warm strength of the body behind him.

"He's so beautiful," came the whispered words from the past. But the voice wasn't Sara's.

Beautiful. Eerie, and comforting at the same time.

Lovely, of course. Heartbreaking, yeah, but considering I haven't watched all season 6 (refused to, in principle that the Daniel/Jack interaction makes the show work for me) I have no idea if this is spoilers for an episode. Is it? Sarcophagus withdrawal? I remember Daniel's but didn't know Jack went through it as well. *ponders*

I understand your principles regarding season 6. But there were key episodes with Daniel in them. Including one where Jack spent a lot of time in and out of a sarcophagus. The question is, of course, whether sarcophagus use is like the use of other drugs, where if you really *need* the drug, it's addictive potential is less. So Daniel got addicted, but he only really *needed* the sarcophagus once in that story. After that he was just *using* for the high, as it were. Jack didn't use the sarcophagus in that way. He was dead every time he went in. Anyway, many people posit that because he was in the sarcophagus so many times, he would have suffered an addiction similar to Daniel's.

The episode in question, if you have the ability to watch it selectively, is Abyss.

Glad you liked this. :) Thanks!

Months later, I've finally been able to watch season six. And boy, did Abyss totally killed me.

This story makes a bit more sense with that as a background. I personally think that you don't get withdrawal when each time you use it, you're dead, but that's just me. *g* Lovely story, all the way. *nods*

This was a wonderful Abyss tag. I'm glad Daniel could be there for Jack because all throughout Abyss I wanted to SMACK him. Actually I wanted to smack him most of season 6. I'm glad he finally came to his senses and got away from being Ascended. There's no way he would have been able to stand idly by and do NOTHING. Gah.

Love that Daniel would go anywhere to help Jack through. And I like how you know it's Abyss because of the whole sarc addiction thing. And yes I think that Jack was definitely gonna have to go through withdrawl.

Oh and don't forget, that Daniel had been in a sarc a few times even before Need. Once in the movie and once in The Serpent's Lair. So he already had a predeliction before using it healthy. And Jack had used it in Hathor. So they both had predelictions to its addictive powers.

*hugs*
