I can't believe I don't know this. Maybe it is not clear - I reviewed the movie transcript.

When Daniel gives his lecture right before meeting Catherine, is he in Chicago or LA?

Attempting to write, but the city I'm in is a critical detail.

I think the reason I'm reluctant to write this one is that I don't really know anything about 1) homelessness/homeless shelters or 2) heroin/addiction/recovery. I need to watch Trainspotting (finally) or something...

Anyway, anybody know which city? Is it really left out of the script, in which case I get to choose?

I wrestle with this one, too! In the movie, the only hint of LA is that one of papers Catherine has in her dossier on him is his UCLA diploma. However the novelization says the lecture was in LA.

I've tried fanwanking it every which way. We know Daniel was doing his post-graduate work in Chicago (Dr. Jordan, Sarah, Steven, etc.). For a starving grad student at the edge of his funding/credibility, giving a lecture in Chicago makes sense. But perhaps there was a conference in LA, and he was funded with a round-trip ticket? It could go either way if you want to ignore the novelization (and some stuff does have to be ignored), but personally I like the symmetry of Chicago (Jack) better.
