Numbers game

Yesterday was the first time I had a bug already on a fic and could track all the hits on it from the very beginning.

I got hits from "151 distinct locations" and "72 distinct browsers" yesterday (289 hits total). Pretty nearly 100% of those browsers hit the ficathon piece. :D Subtract two (for me at home and me at work), and that's a lot of persons looking at it! I think the key number is probably the the distinct browsers (72). That almost proves what I have always suspected about stories. I think in the time frame reported, I got 9 or 10 comments. Assuming 70 distinct readers, that is a comment for every seven people who read it. My previous assumption was more like a 10% response rate, so I was estimating 10 people per comment, but still. If I knock out the "friend factor" and eliminate [livejournal.com profile] cocoajava and [livejournal.com profile] green_grrl, that makes it 8 comments in 68. Between 8 and 9 comments for every ten readers. If we really try to massage the numbers and take out [livejournal.com profile] kuonji14 because she probably would have felt obligated to comment, then we get 7 comments for 67 readers - close to one in ten.

Wow. OK. I'm channelling Husband now. Porn is the only thing that will make me play the numbers game...

Oh, statistics, what fun.

That being said, I'm a terrible person, and tend to read a lot and comment very little. And then I bitch when people do the same thing to my stories. Hypocritical, I know.

I was guessing one in ten based on my own reading behavior. I also read a lot, but (since I started writing, how terrible!) comment much less than I read.

Of course, since I started writing, I read much less, too.

Speaking of writing, *flails about ficathon entry* Dude, I've written myself into a corner again! *cries*

Can I help? Need someone to un-corner you? I'm always ready to work on a puzzle. brainofck at gmail dot com if you need a sounding board. Otherwise, I'll just continue to work for a living. *sighs dramatically*

Teeheehee. Imma add you to the GoogleDoc I've been writing in, and we can chatter there. Expect an e-mail from melayneseahawk at gmail dot com in a few.

I put bugs in my first and last pages, because I was curious how many people would hit the start of my story versus how many people would finish. Though of course without the bells and whistles of paid Toys, it's too much of a pain to sit and count them all! Right now it's just sort of: "lotta hits."

I gave up Very Early worrying about unique visitors. [wry smile] I'm still on the free plan and it'd take way too much bookkeeping on my part to track that, so I just look for hits and subtract my own. On that basis I usually run around 5% comments.

I choked on my coffee there for a moment. I think the bug is a great idea, particularly as I can be terrible about commenting (something about the attention span of a squirrel and how fics often leave me stunned in a good way).

Seriously, though, I'm thinking of how I could work this in to making the bills a lot more fun.
